All good @ Goodwood
This year, several club members made the trip to what has to be regarded as the world’s largest motorsport garden party, the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Founded in 1996 and held in the sprawling grounds of Goodwood House in West Sussex, the annual event has grown year on year into a ‘must see’ for any petrol head.
Spanning 4 days, FOS 2017 began on Thursday 29th June with the Moving Motor Show, which featured world dynamic debuts for a range of cars from manufacturers such as BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, Infiniti, Renault and Abarth. The remainder of the weekend however, focused heavily on the main FOS feature, the hillclimb, with this year’s theme being ‘Peaks of Performance – Motorsport’s Game-Changers’. Everything from pioneer racers from the early 1900s to the latest F1 cars, Le Mans machinery to cutting-edge million pound supercars ran on the hill, with several drivers putting in some serious commitment. In the end, overall glory went to Justin Law in an IMSA Jaguar XJR-16, who fended off stiff competition from a Penske-Chevrolet Indy-Car.
Other celebrations over the weekend were Ferrari’s 70th Birthday, as well as the life of Bernie Ecclestone, with a series of F1 cars and driver’s such as Niki Lauda, Mika Häkkinen, Mark Weber and Nico Rosberg attending in his honour.
If the hillclimb wasn’t your thing, you could browse the car showrooms, spend your money in the hundreds of stalls, visit the Forest Rally Stage, get a thrill at the GAS Arena for BMX and motocross stunt riding or simply relax with a bottle of champagne (albeit expensive) and watch the Red Arrows.
Whilst over in England, the opportunity also arose to visit the British Motor Museum and Jaguar Heritage Collection in Coventry, which exhibits over 300 British cars.
